S.A.F.E. TRAINING

Safe: We move, exercise and train to improve our health not to risk it! So, the paramount consideration when designing a program, planning a session or executing our exercises is the safety of participants. This is why I have studied, watched and been mentored in the most technically correct techniques of lifting, pulling or moving – because we all have only one body, and when I am trusted to help look after yours, I do not take it for granted!

Affordable: At Western Sydney Strength and Conditioning, we are committed to charging a reasonable amount for our time but we will definitely provide a valuable service. It is not just about the duration of time that you spend with us, but it is making sure we provide you the motivation, awareness and skills to take home with you the key messages about improving your health and wellbeing. Whether it be one:one, group sessions or the provision of Strength and Conditioning programme… we will ensure you receive ‘value for your money’.

Functional: We are firm in the belief that our training needs to have a purpose … and this can be in many different forms or reasons. It is not about the type of training we like to do – it is about you. Functional fitness is the key to effective health improvement. It is about aiding your body to be more adapted to the challenges of daily life or your specific sport or your specific lifestyle.

Enjoyable: For many of us, the idea of leaving the lounge, the bedroom or the bar stool to spend time running, jumping, lifting, carrying, getting up, lying down, getting up again, etc. carries the same appeal as visiting the dentist or completing our tax return. So our challenge is to make working with us as appealing as possible through three main aspects; Variety – Challenge – Laughs. We commit to these three important pillars to enjoying exercise.

“No pain, no gain”??? Well that depends on how one defines their pain? If it means that you are working out of your comfort zone and your heart rate (HR) is elevated to the level we need it to be to improve your cardiovascular fitness or your muscles are experiencing “DOMS” – Delayed onset muscle soreness” - from yesterday’s session, that adage may be somewhat true. But pain needs to be identified, understood and managed to ensure we are not impacting our body and our wellbeing negatively. This is why we like to work closely with the people we train with. It is not a matter of ‘turn up, bash out a few exercises and then post on Facebook how hard we have worked’ … No… our philosophy is that we need to understand what you wish to achieve, understand how you wish to approach exercise & fitness training and how to reach the goals we have set together without adversely impacting your health.

Affordable: The most common view about engaging a fitness coach is that it is expensive. But like all things in life ‘expensive’ and ‘valuable’ are subjective, and one person’s ‘expensive’ is another’s ‘well worth it’ & how much money in their bank account may not be the underlying reason behind their opinion.

Then again, it is remarkable what some coaches and trainers will charge (and what some people will pay!!). Yes, we need to make our business viable by charging our customers for our service provision, but we are not a large corporate gym with profit targets and KPI’s to meet !
At Western Sydney Strength and Conditioning, we are committed to charging a reasonable amount for our time but we will definitely provide a valuable service.

Functional: The key question we will ask you when we discuss your training objectives is … why are you here? We are firm in the belief that our training needs to have a purpose … and this can be in many different forms or reasons. It is not about the type of training we like to do – it is about you. If running the City-to-Surf is not your goal – we will not spend time in running 5km intervals and hill climbs!

Functional fitness is the key to effective health improvement. It is about aiding your body to be more adapted to the challenges of daily life or your specific sport or your specific lifestyle. Yes, it is a simple approach, but well under utilised in the fitness industry. One visit to one of the large corporate gyms with massive weight machines and TVSN gimmicky gadgets will demonstrate that.

Functional fitness can take many different forms and there are countless examples:

  • To build enough strength to ensure you can carry the grand children,
  • Be able to transport the shopping bags to the car each time you go shopping
  • Maintain a healthy lung capacity and heart rate!
  • Lose some cms or kgs , because the Doctor told you to
  • Working on the fitness levels in the off-season to get a head-start on the team and opposition for next year …

Whatever it may be, discuss it with James and we will work together to formulate a plan to help you achieve it. If it doesn’t serve a purpose, there is little reason to do it – and motivation in the long run may be difficult to maintain.

Enjoyable: We were horrified to read one of the (self-titled) leading personal trainers in Australia, being critical of coaches and trainers who describe exercise as ‘fun’…. “as someone who has spent a fair portion of her life dripping in sweat while sucking in the big ones, I take umbrage at the notion that while all that wheezing and aching was going on, it was "fun". Well, maybe this particular ‘famous’ trainer is doing something wrong. Yes, we will make sure that your fitness sessions with us are more work than relax, and well out of your comfort zone – because this is how fitness levels improve, by any measure. But just as important, we commit that we will also have a laugh, provide you variety in our sessions and throw you challenges that you may never have seen or thought you would attempt before!

And this is the difference between your average ‘Corporate’ Personal Trainer and the philosophy of Western Sydney Strength and Conditioning … we are working to ensure when you leave the session, you feel you have had the right personal attention and the session has been enjoyable.
For many of us, the idea of leaving the lounge, the bedroom or the bar stool to spend time running, jumping, lifting, carrying, getting up, lying down, getting up again, etc. carries the same appeal as visiting the dentist or completing our tax return. So our challenge is to make working with us as appealing as possible through three main aspects;

Variety – Challenge - Laughs

Variety: No two sessions will be the same !
Challenge: We must test ourselves or else nothing changes.
Laughs: Life is too short not to be happy – in all things we do
